Bega Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) upgrade

Upgrade to the existing Bega Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

Bega water sewer streatment plant sewer ponds and pipework.

Project summary/background

The Bega Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) provides essential sewage treatment services to the township of Bega.

The current plant was built in 2007 and operated by private contractor Tenix until Council resumed ownership and management in 2017.

Since taking over, Council has focused on maintaining and improving the facility to ensure it meets current environmental standards and adequately serves the needs of the Bega township.

Previous consultant reports have identified ageing infrastructure and capacity limitations at the Bega STP. Council has commissioned Beca Hunter H2O to prepare a concept design for an upgraded STP, with completion of design expected by June 2025.

Purpose

Since the Bega STP was upgraded in 2007, rising sewage volumes and the gradual wear and tear of treatment equipment have placed increasing pressure on the plant’s ability to operate efficiently.

The Bega STP operates under a licence issued by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). The proposed upgrades aim to ensure compliance with the EPA’s effluent standards, expand the plant’s capacity to meet increasing demand, enhance energy efficiency and address ongoing issues within the treatment process.

Funding

Funded by Council’s Water and Sewer Fund ($12 million), with the NSW Government’s Safe and Secure Water Program (SSWP) funding up to 25% of the total cost.

Connection to Council's Community Strategic Plan

The Bega STP upgrades align with Bega Valley Shire Council Community Strategic Plan through:

  • C.1 Deliver and support integrated water management.
  • C.2 Ensure land use planning and resource use supports sustainable growth whilst protecting the quality of the natural environment and our rural landscapes.
