Merimbula Lake and Back Lake Flood Study
The flood study for the Merimbula Lake and Back Lake catchments has reached the end of Stage 3 for flood modelling and the draft findings are due for public exhibition later this month.

The flood study for the Merimbula Lake and Back Lake catchments has reached the end of Stage 3 for flood modelling and the draft findings are due for public exhibition later this month.
The study will define the current and future flood behaviour of the catchments that include the Lakes and their tributaries Millingandi Creek, Boggy Creek, Bald Hills Creek and Merimbula Creek.
Bega Valley Shire Council carried out the flood study to assist with planning for and managing the risk the community faces from flooding.
The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and the Federal Ministry of Police and Emergency Services are supporting Council by providing technical assistance and grant funding for the project through the Natural Disaster Resilience Scheme.
Council’s Asset Management Coordinator, Gary Louie, said the preliminary flood modelling for the project was completed using the community survey responses received during May 2015.
“The draft findings will soon be available for public exhibition and four drop-in sessions are planned in Merimbula during the public exhibition period for residents to find out about the project, ask questions and make submissions,” he said.
“The feedback from the public exhibition period will assist the finalisation of the study.
“The participation of the community is critical to its success, particularly when it comes to flood information.
“Residents within the identified study area will receive a letter shortly outlining the public exhibition details.”
The study is being prepared to meet the objectives of the NSW State Government's Flood Prone Land Policy.
Under the State Policy, NSW Local Government councils are responsible for identifying and managing the risk to life and property from flooding.
One of the most important steps in this process is increasing community awareness of flooding, so that people are better able to understand and plan for the flood risks they face.
