Bega Valley Shire Council, households, schools and community groups will join hundreds of thousands of people in October as part of a national reuse, community and sustainable living movement: Garage Sale Trail.

Born in 2010, Garage Sale Trail has grown from a grassroots event to a program powered by over 150 councils nationally.

By organising communities around Australia to host and shop at garage sales on one big day, Garage Sale Trail aims to encourage reuse, unite communities, create awareness around the issues of illegal dumping, provide a platform for fundraising and inspire creativity.

Garage Sale Trail Co-Founder Darryl Nichols says that creativity and self-expression have always been an important part of the Garage Sale Trail initiative.

“We absolutely love the unexpected interpretations of garage sales that we see on the day. In the past, people have sold some quirky items including a signed U2 Gold Record, a beachside apartment, a highland cow, a hovercraft and a definitive collection of Star Wars figurines.”

Council’s Waste Services Officer, Sam Ferrara said it’s a great chance for people to make some money, de-clutter and see your good stuff reused. It’s completely FREE and you keep the proceeds.

“If you have a house full of things you used to love then why not get involved? It’s a great way to get to know your neighbours better; you can even get the whole street registered and have a street sale.” she said.

Whether you’re a bargain hunter or buried in your own junk, visit the Garage Sale Trail website at www.garagesaletrail.com.au and register for free today.

Last year more than 350,000 participants got involved with almost 3 million items listed for sale at over 13,000 garage sales across the country. On the day, the average household sale made $300, while group sales made $650. A massive 75% of participants said that taking part in the event changed their perception of waste and what they could reuse.

Registration is free and open to all households, local businesses, schools and community groups at garagesaletrail.com.au.

The first 2,500 sellers in participating council areas to register by September 25 will receive a free promotional pack with posters and flyers to help maximise your sale success.

The Garage Sale Trail takes place on Saturday 22 October.
