Bega Valley Shire Council invites young people aged between 12 and 24 years to celebrate NSW Youth Week at the Surf Skate Sound event to be held at the Barclay Street Oval, Eden on Thursday 18 April.
Council’s Community Development Coordinator, Melissa Blain-Woodley reminds young people NSW Youth Week runs from 11 to 21 April this year.
“The theme this year is Express. Empower. Get Loud, giving young people the opportunity to showcase their talents, get involved and celebrate where they are from, their culture, their sexuality, gender and identity,” Ms Blain-Woodley said.
“We’ve been fortunate to secure a NSW Government grant to bring Surf Skate Sound to the shire’s young people, with great prizes to be won in an open mic competition, great entertainment and a range of other activities to be enjoyed throughout the afternoon.
“Uncle BJ Cruse will open Surf Skate Sound with a Welcome to Country at midday followed by DJ RosieRose, Duurunu Miru (Sea Dreaming) cultural dance group, art activities, skate workshops, food vans, games, bike maintenance, a chill out space, colour run and more.
“The open mic competition is open to bands, solo artists, poets, storytellers or any young person who has something else to contribute.
“First prize is a half-day recording session with Sam Martin from Sam’s Caravan and there will also be lucky door prizes, donated by local businesses.”
Ms Blain-Woodley said Council genuinely recognises the contribution young people make to the community and is grateful to have local youth sector organisations partner in delivering this exciting event.
“Eden Access Centre, Campbell Page, PCYC, Headspace, Sapphire Health and Wellbeing Service, APM (Advanced Personnel Management) and ESSCI (Eden Social and Services Club) will all be there on the day,” Ms Blain-Woodley said.
Surf Skate Sound will run from 12pm to 4pm. For more information, contact Community Development Officer, Ange McKechnie on 0458 003 386.
