Clearing up some myths about rates
There’s been a lot of talk about council rates lately, so let me be clear: No, we are not putting your rates up by 50%, that’s simply not true.
The Bega Valley is the largest coastal shire in NSW, but we only have around 36,000 residents. Fewer people mean fewer ratepayers to fund the large amount of infrastructure and services we maintain.
Unlike many councils that manage just one pool, oval, or skate park, we maintain:
Around 80% of our roads run through State Forests and National Parks, but we receive no contribution from Forestry or National Parks for their upkeep.
Another common myth is that councils can freely set rates. In fact, the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) sets a yearly "rate peg", the maximum amount councils can increase general rates. To go beyond it, councils must undergo a detailed public process, and IPART has the final say.
This year’s general rate rise is 4.9%, as set by IPART - no more, no less.
Your rates notice includes more than just general rates. It also covers:
A personal perspective
As your Councillor, I want to share a little about what this role really involves. First and foremost, I’m a mum. I’m also a partner, a small business owner, and just like you, a person trying to do their best.
It’s easy to say from the outside, “I could do better.” If you feel that way, I genuinely encourage you to run in the next council election. Put your hand up. Get involved. I won’t pretend this job is easy, it’s not. But it is an opportunity to make a real difference in our community. That’s why I’m here.
