Bega Valley residents are being invited to meet their new Councillors at a community drop-in session on Wednesday, 9 November.
“There are many new faces in the Council Chamber and it’s important we build and strengthen those links between the community and the people who represent them,” General Manager Leanne Barnes said.
All nine Councillors have been going through an induction and education process involving the Office of Local Government, Local Government NSW and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Mayor Kristy McBain said the four new Councillors are on an especially steep learning curve, but all come to the job with a great deal of passion, experience and wisdom that puts them and the Shire in a good position.
“The really important thing is that we keep channels of communication open with the community as we look to developing our forward plans, and this drop-in session is a great start to the next four years working as part of the community,” Cr McBain said.
The drop-in session coincides with the exhibition of the Draft Community Ambitions that were collected during Council’s recent Shire-wide consultation.
“The Community Ambition Statement flows into our Community Strategic Plan which gives Councillors and the organisation direction and guidance over the next four years,” Ms Barnes said.
“Some of the points already raised by the community can be teased out further with Councillors at the drop-in session. These are the community’s vision for the future and include a whole range of areas such as education, the environment, health and transport. The Community Strategic Plan becomes a document for Council to provide to other levels of government and which helps us then look in more detail in what areas are clearly in our area of responsibility.”
Students from Bega Valley, St Patrick’s, Mumbulla, Bemboka and Eden Primary Schools have also been a part of the process and their ideas will be on display.
The Councillor Drop-In Session will run from 3:30 to 6:30 on Wednesday 9 November at the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre, everybody is welcome.
