Purpose

The Pambula Lake (Broadwater) Boat Ramp upgrade will improve the standard of this recreational boating facility, utilised by locals and visitors alike. The boat ramp is an important asset for both recreational users and commercial operators.

Noting the popularity of this facility, particularly during the tourist season, it is Council’s intention to improve its function and safety and to provide the most up to date facilities to encourage improved use and visitation to the region.

Funding

Total project funding: $1,051,597.40

  • Transport for NSW (TfNSW) contribution: $811,712.63 via the NSW Boating Now Program

  • Bega Valley Shire Council contribution: $239,884.77

Connection to Council's Community Strategic Plan

Feedback from the Pambula and Merimbula area in response to the “Understanding Our Place” community engagement process, which subsequently informed the Community Strategic Plan (CSP), included “improved recreation facilities and spaces”. This feedback links to CSP Outcome 1 Active and Healthy Communities; specifically, the second goal of this outcome of “access to good quality recreation and sporting facilities”.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The boat ramp will remain open and the new pontoon and fish cleaning area will be closed for approximately three months during construction of the upgraded facility. A specific timeframe is yet to be confirmed pending finalisation of applicable permits, however we expect the works will be carried out around July 2023 to September 2023.

Commercial operators (oyster farmers, abalone and urchin harvesters, and commercial fishermen) will be able to launch their punts or boats at the existing boat ramp during construction activities.

The project includes the following works:

  • All-abilities access ramp and kayak launching area
  • Upgrade to the exit road to lessen congestion and to improve carparking areas adjacent to the ramp and pontoon

The stakeholders included members from the following groups:

  • Pambula Fishing Club Inc
  • Oyster grower
  • Oyster representative
  • Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee.

Existing boat ramp remains open for use during the construction period.

The lighting specification is yet to be finalised. The lighting is likely to be solar powered and will be activated automatically as light fades in the evening.

The existing manoeuvring area adjacent to the proposed boat ramp and proposed fish cleaning tables will be formalised to improve use and safety at the site.

Council is keen to ensure that boating users gain improved parking and manoeuvring at the boat ramp, especially around the boat ramp and exit road.

There is no plan at this stage to upgrade the existing carparking areas above the boat ramp currently used for longer term parking.
