Bega’s network of shared pathways is about to grow with Bega Valley Shire Council and NSW Roads and Maritime (RMS) partnering on a project that will open new travel and fitness options for residents and visitors.
Work on a new link will be completed within the current financial year, connecting residents around High, Baker, Meringo, Upper and Hill Streets with the Bega CBD and the existing pathway network down to the river.
“The concrete and gravel pathways already in place have proven very popular and have given the township a real lift, so Council is delighted to be moving ahead on this next stage,” Penny Green, Council’s Assets Officer said.
The $280,000 project will be split evenly between Council and RMS and makes use of the NSW Government’s Active Transport Grant Scheme.
“Once complete, the concrete link will allow residents to walk and ride through to the shared path that runs beside the netball courts, Bega Valley Public School and down to the Bega River,” Ms Green said.
It’s hoped this 1km addition to the network will further reduce everyday reliance on cars and promote walking or cycling to town.
“The new track will also make the most of Council’s recent landscaping works around Kisses Lagoon, which will really come into its own as those new native plantings establish,” she said.
“Bega Valley Shire Council continues to look for opportunities from Bermagui to Eden to action the Shire’s Bike Plan. The support of agencies like NSW Roads and Maritime and South East Local Land Services make it all happen quicker which builds the health, environmental and economic benefits of the Plan.
“We look forward to the Mayor and the Member for Bega opening this new section of pathway in the first half of next year,” Ms Green said.
