Bega Valley Shire Council has released a State of the Shire report, marking the End of Term for the previously elected Council.
The report, a requirement under the Local Government Act, summarises the achievements and progress of the last term of Council in implementing the Community Strategic Plan.
Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Anthony McMahon said the report is a testament to the hard work and unwavering commitment of Councillors and staff in delivering projects and services to our community.
“Despite the compounding effects that multiple bushfires, flooding events and the pandemic had on our community and economy, we remained resilient,” Mr McMahon said.
“Council was faced with making numerous difficult decisions and had to continuously assess how to best support our community in the most effective and efficient way possible.
“We have delivered over $188 million in capital projects over the last three financial years. Our roads and bridges were impacted through multiple disaster events and have continued to be a priority with $71 million invested in these vital assets.
“We saw the adoption of several plans and strategies providing clear direction on our collective approach to issues such as active transport, affordable housing, and arts and culture in the Bega Valley.
“Meaningful partnerships were strengthened with Council, seen with the reaffirming of our Memorandum of Understanding with the Bega, Eden and Merrimans Local Aboriginal Lands Councils, and signing a Power Purchase Agreement with a group of NSW councils to meet our 100% renewable energy target.
“The report outlines key projects that were delivered to the support services we provide and much valued facilities our community enjoys. This includes runway upgrades at Merimbula Airport, Bermagui-Brogo Water Treatment Plant, Barclay Street Recreational Precinct in Eden and the restoration of the historic Tathra Wharf amongst many others.
“I extend my appreciation to all Councillors and the Mayor for their leadership and support during the previous term.
“I also thank our staff who have continued to work tirelessly to deliver on Council’s strategic direction and implement the many projects, programs and services to our community.
“Their commitment, passion and professionalism has been pivotal to supporting our community.”
