Proposed new employment zones for Bega Valley

The NSW Government is seeking feedback from the community on new employment zones that will replace all existing business and industrial zones throughout the state.

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) is working on a suite of planning reforms to ensure land use zones are fit-for-purpose and support productivity.

The reforms will enable several of Council’s planned changes to land use to support employment-generating development and job growth in the shire.

Council’s Acting Director Community, Environment and Planning, Emily Harrison said the new employment zones, which Council endorsed for public exhibition in March this year, will replace all existing business and industrial zones from 1 December 2022.

“The proposed changes for our shire include enabling Bega and Merimbula to grow as major centres, allowing large retail stores on the outskirts of Bega and Eden, and allowing Eden’s Edrom Road industrial precinct to specialise in heavy industrial development,” Ms Harrison said.

“Council has worked with NSW DPE to ensure the most impacted properties in our shire move to a similar zone under the changes to support existing and new development.”

The new employment zones are on public exhibition on the NSW DPE website.

Impacted landowners will receive a letter from Council outlining the changes and how to find more information and make a submission.

Submissions are due by 12 July.
