New intake of cadets bridges skills gap and staff shortage

Bega Valley Shire Council is working hard to address pressing skills and staff shortages through a recent intake of six cadets in its engineering and planning departments.

Bega Valley Shire Council is working hard to address pressing skills and staff shortages through a recent intake of six cadets in its engineering and planning departments.

"These talented and eager to learn individuals bring fresh perspectives and a will to address critical needs within the community,” Council’s CEO, Anthony McMahon said.

“Together they mark a significant investment in the future of infrastructure development and town planning in the shire.

"By investing in emerging talent, we demonstrate our dedication to nurturing careers that are not only valuable to our cadets but also to the broader community.

"Retaining skilled professionals in our community strengthens our capacity to deliver services, bolsters the local workforce and boosts the Bega Valley’s economy.”

Mr McMahon said he took his first career steps through the same combination of work and study.

"As someone with an engineering background I understand how challenging it can be to get the ball rolling. It wasn't until I embarked on my journey as a cadet engineer in the workforce that everything fell into place." Mr McMahon said.

“My career was kickstarted by pursuing engineering studies while gaining practical experience in the field. This blend of academia and real-world application made the learning process much more fulfilling and tangible."

"Engineering and planning are among the most sought-after skill sets in Australia, offering fulfilling and lucrative career opportunities. These are great areas to work in, but often it’s a lack of information that holds back young people especially in choosing these career paths.

“There are many ways to learn a skill or trade, but our workforce of past cadets and trainees perfectly demonstrates the value of learning on the job.

“We are really proud to onboard our latest cadets. They join other cadets and trainees who recently commenced employment and learning in Council roles.”
