Household chemical collection days

Bega Valley Shire Council is again offering people a chance to safely dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals at no cost.

Bega Valley Shire Council is again offering people a chance to safely dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals at no cost.

“Most of us have been confronted at some time with the problem of what to do with unwanted, out-of-date or leftover household chemicals. The solution is to take advantage of one of Council’s free clean out days later this month and again in October” Waste Services Manager, Toby Browne said.

“Householders are encouraged to check what’s under the sink or on the top shelf in the shed. Some of these chemicals can be harmful if stored or disposed of improperly, so it’s important to dispose of these substances safely,” Mr Browne said.

The three household chemical collection days will be held at:

  • Merimbola St carpark in Pambula on Saturday 30 July
  • Bega Saleyards, Kerrisons Lane on Sunday 31 July
  • Dickinson Park,  Lamont St, Bermagui on Saturday 15 October

Opening times for all three events are 8am to 2:30pm.

Paint and paint related products, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, car batteries & motor oils, fluorescent globes and tubes will all be accepted.

Asbestos, explosives, clinical waste and radioactive material (except smoke detectors) will not be accepted.

“Materials should be transported to the clean out events in the boot of the car,” Mr Browne advised.

“It’s also important never to mix chemicals as this may cause a dangerous reaction.”

Try to keep all chemicals in their original container and ensure the containers are clearly labelled and well-sealed. If you do not know what is in the container, label it ‘unknown chemical’.

Liquids can leak during transport so wrap containers securely in newspaper and place them into sturdy plastic bags, and then pack them in plastic buckets or trays.

“Council can also accept paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, motor and cooking oils, batteries, florescent tubes and smoke detectors all year round at Merimbula Recycling & Waste Depot during regular opening hours,” Mr Browne said.
