Bega Valley Shire Council is urging the community to report any issues in the water and sewer network as soon as they arise.
“We’re approaching the time of year when extra pressure is placed on our sewer network through increased visitor numbers and the likelihood of heavy rain events,” Water and Sewer Services Manager, Steve Marshall said.
“Reporting sewer issues early allows staff to act quickly and prevent small problems from escalating into larger ones.
“With the Bega Valley home to some of the state’s most pristine marine environments and waterways, quick action is essential.
“A sewer spill, for example, can have severe impacts on marine life, the local shellfish industry and even local tourism, while also posing risks to human health.
“The sooner Council is alerted, the faster we can respond and mitigate any potential harm.
“Things to look for may be wet ground near a sewer pump station or inspection hatch, which may be accompanied by a foul smell.
“In these instances, take note of the location and give us a call, and most importantly, don’t touch any fluid or solids, or attempt opening any hatches.”
Mr Marshall said reporting a leaking water main is equally important. Left unaddressed, leaks can impact water pressure and availability for other residents connected to the same line.
“Early detection allows our crews to locate leaks without too much disruption to households,” he said.
By reporting problems, you help us maintain the integrity of our water and sewer systems while also protecting our precious natural environments.
To report a water or sewer leak, call Bega Valley Shire Council 24 hours-a-day on (02) 6499 2222.
