Bega Valley Shire Council is stepping up its emphasis on the protection of local waterways from the impacts of erosion and sediments.
Employees from across Council recently attended training sessions on the latest standards relating to erosion and sediment control.
They included construction teams, water and wastewater teams, engineers, planners, building surveyors and compliance and enforcement officers.
The training was provided by Strategic Environmental and Engineering Consulting and delivered by company principal Andrew Macleod who is also president of the International Erosion Control Association.
Council’s Environment Manager, Danny Madigan, said that while Council staff were aware of their responsibilities, the workshop had provided them with the opportunity to refocus on the issue.
“Soil and water management issues are continually changing and Council staff, as well as local builders and developers, need to ensure that erosion and sediment control measures are as effective as possible,” Mr Madigan said.
“In a coastal area like the Bega Valley Shire with its wonderful waterways and lakes, it is critical that soil and water be protected.”
As a follow up to the training, Council has organised an information session with Mr Macleod and SEEC for local builders, contractors and developers.
This is a unique opportunity for builders and developers to hear about the latest erosion and sediment controls from a recognised leader in the field and about Council’s emphasis on best onsite practices.
