As a farmer from Cobargo who has been on Council since 2002, I’ve seen a lot of change and growth over the years, but I’m always impressed by the way the community advocates for what it needs and pulls together when times are tough.

In the last few years in particular, the Cobargo community has come together to support each other and rebuild the main street. Of course they’ve had financial support from the federal government, but it’s the community who is doing the work and it’s  catching the eye of everyone who goes through town, particularly the resilience centre which is moving along at pace.

The Cobargo Showground Trust has done a fabulous job upgrading the site to provide exactly what the community needs for events like the annual Cobargo Show and upcoming Folk Festival – both of which draw in crowds from across the shire and beyond – and the work Council did to connect the site to town sewerage has been a great asset for that facility.

As a farmer, I know how important our roads and bridges are, and it’s great to see the Murrabrine Lane Bridge replacement is about to go ahead, shoring up better access for our farming community near Cobargo. This is one of many bridge replacements across the shire, including the recently opened Watergums Creek Bridge at Wonboyn, which withstood its first test a few weekends ago with heavy rain and flooding in the south of the shire, as well as a solid program of road grading and resealing underway.

The swimming pool at Cobargo is going gangbusters with kids and the swimming club, proving what a great asset it still is, despite its age. And with the new sealed carpark at the skate park and sports oval, there’s improved recreation facilities for everyone.

Finally, the Cobargo Hall is a real credit to the community and the committee who invest countless hours of volunteer time to manage its use and support its upkeep and improvements. As one of 18 halls across the shire, this wouldn’t be possible without our volunteers, and I commend you all.
