The implementation of Bega Valley Shire Council’s Affordable Housing Strategy is progressing well, with recent developments opening doors to increased housing options in the area.

Acting Community, Environment and Planning Director, Iliada Bolton said Council is actively supporting projects that will deliver much-needed affordable housing to the area.

"We’ve started work on the Urban Renewal Project, focusing on land in Bega, Eden and Merimbula to explore opportunities for taller buildings and more floor space," Ms Bolton said.

“This could look like more homes near our town centres, above shops and revitalising older housing areas.

“A rezoning plan for Bega is also taking shape, with a proposal underway to unlock more land for development in and around the area.

“Work is advancing on identifying suitable Council-owned land for potential housing projects.

“And we are pleased to have recently made progress with amendments to the Local Environmental Plan to encourage small lot creation and multi-dwelling housing.”

Ms Bolton said efforts to address homelessness and rental stress will only be realised through our partnerships with local housing providers and advocacy groups.

“We’re simultaneously communicating with local groups while discussing funding options with state and federal governments to push for further investment in long-term housing solutions,” she said.

“We are committed to open communication and community engagement. Through workshops, surveys and consultation, we are incorporating community insights into policy and planning decisions. These conversations help shape housing initiatives that align with the needs of residents.

“Housing affordability and availability is a key challenge throughout Australia, and the Bega Valley Shire is not immune from these pressures.

“The work we’re doing now is building a foundation for a stronger future. Access to safe, affordable housing is a priority for many people in our community.”

Regular community updates on the strategy’s implementation will continue.
