Bega Valley Shire Council’s Water and Sewerage crew were on site late last night and early this morning (Wednesday) following a report of a sewage spill in Merimbula.
The spill in Park St was first reported by residents to a local real estate company on Tuesday morning and word got to Council later on Tuesday evening.
General Manger, Leanne Barnes said that Council’s Water and Sewerage team initiated an onsite response as soon as the incident was reported.
“Our Water and Sewerage team enacted a response as soon as we became aware of the situation,” she said.
“It is vital in circumstances such as these that any breach of Council’s sewerage infrastructure is reported to Council immediately because we have the qualified staff and equipment to deal with the situation quickly.
“In this instance, a delayed response in reporting the spill has resulted in damage to local accommodation and sewage flowing into Merimbula Lake.
“We have enacted all protocols as per the Environment Protection Authority’s requirements, which has resulted in a precautionary one month closure of localised oyster leases until the lake water can be fully assessed.
“Two local flats had carpets damaged as a result of the spill and both properties are having carpets replaced today.
“Council’s Water and Sewerage management team completed their initial response to the incident early this morning,” Ms Barnes said.
To report any incident relating to Council’s water and sewerage infrastructure please call 02 6499 2222. This service is available 24 hours a day.
