Council commits to supporting emergency communications in Tathra

Bega Valley Shire Council has reaffirmed its commitment to improving emergency communications in the Tathra area, while ensuring community concerns are heard.

Bega Valley Shire Council has reaffirmed its commitment to improving emergency communications in the Tathra area, while ensuring community concerns are heard.

At this week’s Council meeting, Councillors resolved to work closely with the NSW Telco Authority and the local community to find a suitable location for critical communications infrastructure for emergency services to communicate with each other.

“Council considered a proposal from the NSW Telco Authority to lease land at Lawrence Park in Tathra for a 25-metre pole and equipment shelter, but with strong community objections, we agreed it wasn’t the right location for the infrastructure,” Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said.

“Instead, we will continue discussions with the NSW Telco Authority to explore alternative Council-owned sites in Tathra and surrounding areas.”

Mayor Fitzpatrick said Council is committed to finding a balance between the need for reliable emergency communications and the concerns of local residents.

“We know how critical telecommunications are in times of crisis, and we also acknowledge the concerns raised by the community,” he said.

“Council is committed to working collaboratively with the NSW Telco Authority and local residents to find a more suitable location that meets both emergency communication needs and community expectations.”

"I look forward to working with the NSW Telco Authority and the Tathra community to ensure this vital infrastructure is installed and operational, delivering reliable communications for the people of Tathra."

Council staff will continue collaborating with all stakeholders to assess alternative sites, with Councillors to make the final decision on site approval at a later date.
