Bega Valley Shire Council’s CEO and a team of cadets have embarked on a tour of local high schools, inspiring students with a range of exciting career opportunities.
CEO, Anthony McMahon said Council is actively engaging with local high schools to help senior students explore career pathways after graduation.
“We recently visited Eden High School to speak with Year 11 students about the range of traineeships, apprenticeships and cadetships Council offers. This follows a similar visit to Lumen Christi Catholic College,” Mr McMahon said.
“The highlight of these visits is the cadets sharing their personal experiences and the projects they are working on.
“From engineering design and managing investments to assessing planning proposals and improving the shire’s water and sewer systems, the cadets provided a firsthand look at the diverse opportunities available at Council.”
Current Engineering Cadet, Bill Sutherland shared his journey with Council, noting that cadetships, which often include university-level study, take longer to complete than traineeships or apprenticeships.
“I left school to take up a bridge carpentry apprenticeship and after finishing that I had the chance to apply for an engineering cadetship. I’ve now been in the program for almost a year and there are lots of career opportunities opening up to me,” he said.
Mr McMahon said there are current and upcoming opportunities for students considering a career with Council.
“We’ve just advertised for several water and sewer trainees, and we hope to open another round of cadetships in planning and engineering in the coming months, ideally aligning with current Year 12 students who are exploring their options for next year,” he said.
Council is hoping to leverage a new NSW Government grant program aimed at supporting local government apprentices, trainees, and cadets to create even more career opportunities.
In the coming weeks, Council and its cadets will visit Bega High School and Sapphire Coast Anglican College, with plans for an information evening for parents and community members to learn more about these opportunities.
“The information session will be on held Thursday 28 November at 5.30pm in the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre and will also be available for those unable to attend in person to attend via Microsoft Teams with a recording also to be taken and made available on Councils website” Mr McMahon said.
