This project aims to improve the access and amenity of several key walking trails in Tura Beach.
This project aims to improve the access and amenity of several key walking trails in Tura Beach. The project consists of several sub-projects including refurbishment of the two beach stairways at Dolphin Cove and The Point. Both stairways have been complemented with the construction of two linking gravel walking tracks, a total of 460m of track, to improve access in all weather conditions. These works are complete, but some additional minor works will be ongoing at these sites.
The project also includes the construction of 800m of new walking track to the Tura Headland and will feature three viewing platforms which will provide safe vantage points for locals and tourists and are expected to be very popular sightseeing destinations especially during the whale watching season. This work is scheduled for February 2021 immediately after the school holidays with the site expected to be closed to the public for 5 weeks.
Tura Headland is very significant site culturally and archeologically and is rich with Aboriginal Cultural Heritage. Extensive work has been undertaken by a consultant archaeologist to obtain an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) for the proposed works. During this process, Bega Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) were engaged and consulted.
Several members of Bega LALC will continue to be involved throughout the construction phase of the Tura Headland walking track and viewing platforms as they will be engaged by the contractor to work as part of the construction team, gaining construction skills and having a meaningful involvement in the project.
Funding received from the NSW Government under the Stronger Country Communities Fund, Round 2.
Bega Valley Shire Council are contributing to the overall budget.
