Project Summary

Creating the first Changing Places facility in the Bega Valley, this project will upgrade the public amenities building at Taylors Square in Tathra to include a high needs accessible toilet and change facilities.

A Changing Places facility provides suitable amenities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

The Bega Valley Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee (AIAC) has identified a clear gap in the provision of publicly accessible ‘high needs’ facilities in the Shire.

Upgrading the facility improves its usability for all users and allows people with high support needs to fully participate in the community.

This project links directly to the recently upgraded Tathra Lot Stafford Inclusive Playspace, completed in 2019 as a demonstration project for the Everyone Can Play Guidelines. The existing public toilets at the site are aged and not meeting the needs of all users of the Inclusive Playspace.

'High Needs' (i.e. 'Changing Places') facilities are larger than standard accessible toilets and include:

  • a height adjustable adult-sized change table.
  • a tracking hoist and space for two people either side of a peninsula toilet.
  • facilities for people with complex disabilities and their carers that find standard accessible toilets do not meet their needs.

The Taylors Square site is well suited to this type of specialised facility, particularly due to its popularity and high levels of use, the relationship with the ‘Everyone Can Play’ inclusive playspace, Tathra Surf Club, and the patrolled beach with its beach wheelchair. It is also close to the Andy Poole Drive shops.

The project will have multiple benefits for the community, including much improved accessibility for those with limited mobility and their carer/s, improved recreation and social interaction, commerce and tourism and improved facilities for people using the beach and events in the Tathra Surf Club patrol area.
