Part of the National Construction Code

The Building Code of Australia is part of the National Construction Code which sets the standards of building work in Australia. It is a uniform set of technical provisions for building work and plumbing and drainage installations which allows for variations in climate and geological or geographic conditions.

The National Construction Code comprises the Building Code of Australia, Volume One and Two; and the Plumbing Code of Australia, as Volume Three.

The Building Code of Australia is produced and maintained by the Australian Building Codes Board on behalf of the Australian government and state and territory governments.

Goals of the Building Code of Australia

The goals of the Building Code of Australia are to achieve and maintain acceptable standards of:

  • Structural adequacy
  • Safety, including structural safety and safety from fire
  • Health and sustainability
  • Amenity for the benefit of the community
