South East Specialist Centre

Dr Jeffrey van Gangelen is a Specialist General and Colorectal Surgeon and is the founder of the South East Specialist Centre at 116 Gipps Street Bega. Patients are referred to Dr Van Gangelen by their GP, local medical centre or by doctors working in the hospital. Patients who are admitted to the South East Regional Hospital or National Capital Private Hospital can request that Dr Van Gangelen see them as an inpatient for assessment. Gastro-intestinal: Dr Van Gangelen investigates and treats abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, change in bowel habits, bleeding, anaemia, reflux, indigestion, gallstones, haemorrhoids, anal pain and rectal prolapse. Patients are also accepted for bowel cancer screening due to symptoms or a family history. Many patients are monitored by Dr Van Gangelen long term due to an increased risk of bowel cancer or a personal history of polyps, bowel cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. Patients who already have a diagnosis of bowel cancer can be referred to Dr Van Gangelen for cancer surgery. Dr Van Gangelen performs laparoscopic / key hole surgery to treat bowel cancer and he works closely with oncologists to coordinate care.  Dr Van Gangelen is happy to coordinate the care of patients with other gastrointestinal cancers such as liver, oesophagus, pancreas and gastric cancer and works closely with teams at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney to manage these conditions.  Hernias: Ventral, umbilical or inguinal hernias or hernias following previous surgery (incisional hernias) are repaired with laparoscopic techniques. Dr Van Gangelen has a special interest in work related injuries resulting in hernias. Corrective surgery for work cover can be expedited using the private system to return patients to work quickly.  Skin cancer: Dr van Gangelen treats patients with skin cancers including melanoma and performs lymph node biopsies, sentinel node biopsies and lymph node clearance. He works closely with oncologists in the management of melanomas and advanced skin cancers which may also require chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He takes great pride in achieving exceptional cosmetic results and has established a reputation for this using a number of reconstructive techniques. Hand Surgery: Conditions of the hands that Dr Van Gangelen treats include skin cancers, carpal tunnel syndrome and Dupuytren’s contracture.

Dr Jeffrey van Gangelen is a Specialist Laparoscopic and Endoscopic General Surgeon consulting at the South East Specialist Centre Gipps Street Bega and operating at National Capital Private Hosptial Canberra, Brindabella Endoscopy Centre Canberra, Mogo Day Surgery and the South East Regional Hospital.

Jeffrey completed his Medical Degree at the Australian National University and gained fellowship with the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in Sydney. He is a recognised Gastroscopist and Colonoscopist with the Conjoint Committee for Recognition in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE) and participates in the rigorous CCRTGE recertification program which ensures his work meets the highest standards when compared to his peers Australia wide. Jeffrey holds Specialist and General registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Jeffrey  is the regional supervisor of General Surgery training with RACS and is part of the Board of General Surgery training committee. He is the Director of Surgical Training at the South East Regional Hospital. Jeffrey is also a  recognised supervisor of Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy training with CCRTGE and a senior lecture at the Australian National University Rural Clinical School. 

Jeffrey participates in regular peer review audits and clinical governance activities and is an expert advisor in root cause analysis reviews.

Jeffrey is passionate about supporting third world health care and met his wife Angela, a Specialist Paediatric Nurse, on Mercy Ships Africa. Together they have four young children.
