Old School Museum Merimbula

The Old School Museum is housed in a building made of local sandstone in 1873 which is a rare example of the teacher’s residence and schoolroom being under one roof. The collection comprises 3600 artefacts plus over 8000 documents and 3000 photographs relevant to the Merimbula/Pambula/Lochiel/Nethercote region. It is a treasure trove for those wishing to research local or family history or simply to see how our forbears lived. Among our treasures are a 100-year-old oyster punt (listed on the National Register of Historic Vessels) and the writing desk of Syms Covington, assistant to Charles Darwin on the epic voyage of HMS Beagle. The Museum is an excellent venue for events and hosted, most recently, a book launch of the history of the Merimbula oyster festivals of the 1980s. The grounds are used for a display of historic machinery and a tip dray. We are constantly upgrading our facilities. The Museum is run by the Management Committee of the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society Inc. and is staffed by volunteers from the Society.
