Tathra Wharf Museum

10am to 3pm; Saturday and Sunday

The Tathra Wharf Museum showcases Tathra’s foundation and maritime history – beginning with our original inhabitants, the Yuin people, building of the wharf, establishment of Tathra and surrounding areas and the museum and its many unique historical artefacts, models and displays.

Tathra Wharf is the only remaining original timber deep sea wharf on the east coast of Australia.

During the 1800s, the Bega River flats and coastal areas nearby were developed, and local produce of pigs, beef and skins, butter, cream and cheese and wattle bark were transported to Sydney via primitive roads.

In 1862, a platform was constructed at Tathra over the original jetty to provide access for the shipping of those goods to Sydney.

In 1866, a single-storey cargo shed was added and the Illawarra Steamship Company (locally known as the Pig & Whistle Line) provided a regular transport service by steamer, beginning a near century partnership with the district's farmers.
