Bega Valley Shire Council is calling for public assistance to identify the person responsible for removing a shared zone bollard at Bar Beach in Merimbula.
25 October 2017
Bega Valley Shire Council is calling for public assistance to identify the person responsible for removing a shared zone bollard at Bar Beach in Merimbula.
Two accessible parking bays were recently re-established at the site following consultation between Council, the Local Traffic Committee and the Friends of Bar Beach Group and the subsequent development of a program to improve parking and traffic flow.
Council’s Strategy and Asset Services Manager, Jason Deller, said Council were notified of the incident by frequent users of the area less than 48 hours after the installation of the shared zone bollards.
“The individual (purported to be a local) was observed removing the bollard and discarding it to park in that location,” Mr Deller said.
“Obviously we are extremely disappointed, with this person’s actions putting the safety of the public at risk and the cost of the repair coming at the community’s expense.
“These shared zones are part of the recently changed accessible parking codes and allow wheelchair access through the site and also provide additional space for people with car mounted wheelchairs to unload in a safe manner,” Mr Deller said.
The matter has been referred to Police and Council’s rangers will be monitoring the site.
