Bega Valley Shire Council has partnered with Keep Australia Beautiful NSW to inspire a new generation of sustainability champions and waste warriors.

Council’s Waste Education Officer, Ms Kruse said the EnviroMentors program is designed to foster ownership of sustainability and waste awareness among preschool aged children.

“First and foremost, this is a fun program that focuses on the positives of getting waste management right,” she said.

“Waste education can sometimes get bogged down in focusing on the negative impacts poor waste management can have on the community and environment.

“When delivering waste awareness messages particularly to young children it is important to keep it fun and focus on solutions and the positive knock-on effect this can have on the world around us.

“The Keep Australia Beautiful team entertained and educated 285 preschool students across nine preschools in the shire through a series of workshops held over five days.”

Ms Kruse said it was great to hear positive feedback coming from classrooms across the shire.

"We heard reports of children talking about the visit long after the educators left for the day, which is a really promising sign,” she said.

"Already, students are asking for the program to come back again, demonstrating the value of this long-running program that educates on sustainability and waste management throughout Australia.

“Celebrating its 28th year, the EnviroMentors program reaches more than 30,000 students annually and we are delighted to have partnered with the program in delivering an important message to these amazing waste aware kids.

“The EnviroMentors program matches perfectly with our ongoing Let’s Get it Sorted waste education program held in primary and high school classrooms across the shire.”

The Let’s Get it Sorted program is run in partnership with the Bournda Environmental Education Centre. For more information visit Council’s website.
