Demolition of the former Merimbula Visitor Information Centre building on Beach Street will commence on Monday 2 November.
Council’s Project and Property Services Manager, Daniel Djikic says the demolition works are to be undertaken by local contractor All Dirt and Demo, with the demolition expected to take up to three weeks, depending on the weather.
“Parts of the boardwalk and area surrounding the building will be fenced off to the general public whilst the works are underway and appropriate environmental controls will be put in place to mitigate any potential impacts on Merimbula Lake,” Mr Djikic said.
The large existing spotted gum tree adjacent to the building will be retained and protected, with the site to be established as an open grassed area in accordance with the Central Business District Landscape Master Plan adopted by Council in 2015.
“The CBD Masterplan provides for the foreshore in this area to revert to public space; and removing the building is in line with this,” Mr Djikic said.
He says with the Visitor Information Centre having relocated to its new premises late last year, Council had explored options for the short-term use of the old building. However, its aging condition and the current zoning and approved use as a tourist information centre only, has limited its potential for future use.
