Help shape the future growth of Bega and Wolumla

Bega Valley Shire Council is seeking feedback on its draft structure plans for urban development in Bega and Wolumla.

Council’s Director of Community, Environment and Planning, Emily Harrison explained a structure plan guides future land use and development for a particular area and is one of the first steps in the development of new urban areas.

“The population growth in the shire is causing a housing shortage, both for purchase and rent, which has accelerated our need for future urban release areas and additional housing stock in the short-term,” Ms Harrison said.

“Land to the south of Bega has been identified as a suitable location for urban residential development, as was land adjacent to the village of Wolumla.

“More detailed master planning following the exhibition of the draft Structure Plan will determine the number of new houses for Bega and we estimate Wolumla could accommodate approximately 850 new homes.”

Ms Harrison said earlier this year, Council received a NSW Government grant through the Regional Strategic Planning Fund to coordinate the planning and infrastructure requirements for urban residential growth areas in Bega and Wolumla.

“We now have draft structure plans for both,” Ms Harrison said.

“The Draft Bega Structure Plan analyses the opportunities and constraints to urban growth in the area and details how housing objectives can be addressed through future development of three new neighbourhoods.

“The Draft Wolumla Structure Plan investigates the opportunities and constraints of the zoned urban release areas and details how housing objectives can be addressed through future development of the village.

“Both plans aim to accelerate the development of land that is ready to meet the shire’s current and future housing needs.

“Once adopted, the structure plans will provide a framework to guide Council when considering subdivision and development proposals.”

Feedback on the draft structure plans close on Sunday 3 December.

An online survey is available on Council’s website for the Draft Bega Structure Plan and another for the Draft Wolumla Structure Plan.
