Schools Waste Program

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - For schools participating in the 'Let's get it sorted' program in conjunction with Bournda Environmental Education Centre.


 

The ‘Let’s get it sorted’ program is available to all schools within the Bega Valley Shire region to implement waste related activities and/or education projects.

This program will be offered over a six year period in conjunction with Bournda Environmental Education Centre for projects with one or more of the following outcomes:

  • Encourage and foster sustainable waste management behaviour amongst the school community
  • Promote the reduce, reuse and recycle message
  • Increase community awareness of BVSC’s Waste and Recycling Centres and their role
  • Supports waste strategies undertaken by Council
  • Supports innovative waste management projects

The following schools are participating in the program:

2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23

Background

Bega Valley Shire Council recognizes the importance and significance of supporting volunteers, non-profit organisations, community groups and education providers in delivering programs and projects that have clear community benefit and align with Council's waste minimisation strategies.

Overall grant program objectives

The Program aims to encourage and assist community involvement in the management of waste minimisation and education for the benefit of the whole region.

Grant specific criteria/information

  • The grants program is competitive.
  • Projects that support and demonstrate in detail, a combination of waste minimisation and waste education will rate more highly during the application review process.
  • Applicants are expected to contribute to the project through in-kind use of labour or materials.
  • Successful project will need to be available for a possible field trip by interested residents or the subject of a case study to highlight any educational aspects.
  • Schools requesting support to implement FOGO will be supported for up to 2 years and will need to take on ongoing costs of the service post the grant period.

The Bega Valley Shire Council has allocated $55,000 per annum for the Community Waste Assistance Grants program to support Schools and Community deliver waste related projects that support the themes of the Bega Valley Shire Council’s Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2018-2028:

  • Theme 3. Divert more waste from landfill
