Beach Profiles
Beaches in the Bega Valley Shire are patrolled every day
from Boxing Day to Australia Day.
Patrol hours are from 10am to 5pm.
Patrolled Beaches - North to South
Camel
Rock - Bermagui
Known for its Camel shaped rock at the northern end of the beach.
Camel Rock is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of crowds.
Board riders will find it one of the more consistent places to get a
wave on the coast. It picks up the swell from every direction.
Camel Rock is one of the few beaches protected from Bluebottles in a
northeaster. Head about 8 Kilometers north from Bermagui to find the
Camel.

Horse Shoe Bay - Bermagui
Facing
almost directly north, Horse Shoe Bay is one of the safer beaches on our
stretch of coastline. Families will enjoy its relative safety and
close proximity to the shops of Bermagui. Enjoy a swim in the morning
and retreat to the village from the midday sun and afternoon winds.

Tathra
Tathra beach has its patrolled area at the far southern end. The beach
itself is a popular walk for beachcombers. Care should be taken while
exploring the northern end of the beach, as this is a nesting site for rare
and endangered bird species. Stick to the shoreline and please,
no dogs here. The southern end has close proximity to the shops and
can be a hive of activity in summer. Check out the historic Tathra
wharf.

Short Point
- Merimbula
A popular surfing spot for locals and high-end surfers, Short Point picks up
a lot of swell. Care should be taken in the water, which is more
suited to accomplished surfers and swimmers. The Back Lake is a
feature at Short Point but is not patrolled. A walk out on the grassy
headland can offer an excellent vantage point for whale watchers.

Main Beach
- Merimbula
The most popular beach on our coastline is Main Beach. Families flock
to its shoreline in summer being in close proximity to Merimbula and a
variety of holiday accommodation. It faces southeast and offers smooth
water in the prevailing northeast winds which are accentuated by
the headland. Wind and kite surfers have not overlooked this.
Main Beach is a kite and windsurfing hotspot.

Pambula
At the southern end of Main Beach is Pambula. The beach that links
these two locations is approximately 6 kilometres long. It is another
popular place to beach comb. Due to the length and curvature of the
beach, Pambula faces differently to Main Beach. Smooth water is
found here when a southerly is blowing. Tourists will be amazed to see kangaroos, which regularly frequent the grassy areas near the beach itself.

Aslings -
Eden
Being relatively quiet Aslings Beach is another good place to escape the
crowds. The patrolled area is located in front of the Cricket oval,
which is fairly central on the beach itself. Most board riding is done
at the southern end. A further walk south on to the headland brings
you to historic sites used by whalers over the last century to spot whales.
Eden is well known for its whaling past.
