Merimbula Library Portal closure

Bega Valley Shire Council advises residents that the Merimbula Library Portal based at the Bega Valley Regional Learning Centre will close on Friday 30 June 2017.

However, the library returns box outside the Regional Learning Centre building will remain and will be emptied on a regular basis so that members are still able to return library materials.

The Home Library Service will be available for those people with genuine difficulties accessing our library branches. This service utilises volunteers to pick up and drop off books to people’s homes.

Manager of Community, Culture and Information, Simon Schweitzer said there has been an 80 percent decline in usage of the Library Portal since the opening of the Tura Marrang Library and Community Centre in June 2016.

“The full range of services and activities on offer at Tura Marrang Library and Community Centre is a major attraction for the community and it is no longer viable to keep the Portal in Merimbula operating,” he said.

The Library Portal opened in October 2015 to provide a limited range of library services to residents after the Merimbula library closed and while the new facility at Tura Marrang was being built.

Tura Marrang Library and Community Centre is a modern and vibrant facility with full access to the library collection, magazines, free WiFi and computer access, printing and scanning services, study spaces, weekly Storytime and Rhyme Time sessions for children and regular events such as author talks, craft groups and Tech Training.

All existing staff at the Library Portal will continue to work within the broader library services team.
