Suggest names for Shire roads

Wednesday 25 November 2015

Each year, the Bega Valley Shire Council receives many applications for new developments and sub-divisions or requests for change of road names due to duplication of names within a locality.

To this end, the Bega Valley Shire Council  is inviting suggestions from the community of appropriate names for future developments or road renaming within the Shire.

Suggested road names will be assessed against a standard criteria and must subsequently be approved by Council and the Geographical Names Board of NSW.

Council suggests nominating road names based on the following themes:

  • Local Aboriginal heritage;
  • Early explorers, pioneers, settlers and historical figures;
  • Natural environment, marine, flora or fauna.

Suggested road names must include background information such as where the name comes from; how it connects  with the community; if the name is commemorative; who or what the road is named after; the relevance of the name; and any historical reference or dates.

Note that roads and places in NSW can only be named after people who have been deceased for at least two years.

To lodge your road name suggestion write to the General Manager, Bega Valley Shire Council, PO Box 492, Bega NSW 2550 before 5pm on Friday,11 December.

For more information on suggesting road names, phone Council’s Road Naming Project Officer on 6499 2254.
