Overnight power problems combined with the cold weather have resulted in the closure of the Sapphire Aquatic Centre’s pools this afternoon to return water temperatures back to normal.
Council’s Manager of Leisure and Recreational Services, John Grady said that the pool water temperature is substantially lower than normal and forecasted low air temperatures for the week ahead will make it difficult to restore warmth to the water if the Centre remains open.
“With this in mind and in an effort to increase water temperature, the pools will be closed from 12.30pm today,” he said
“We will be putting the covers on to restore normal water temperature and checking on the problems that occurred over night.
“With the current cold weather and no programs scheduled for this afternoon we are expecting a very quiet day at the pool and consequently we have chosen to close the pools ready for a busier day tomorrow.
“We will open on Saturday morning as normal at 8:30am.
“The gym will remain open to the public as per normal until 7pm tonight however, for safety reasons the amenities in the pool hall will be unavailable. The bathrooms in the gym and pool foyer will be accessible,” Mr Grady said.
