Aboriginal Totems and rock monument stored during Bega works

Thursday 3 September 2015

The Aboriginal Totems and rock monument outside Bega Valley Shire Council offices are being moved and carefully stored during the Littleton Gardens landscaping works.

Bega Valley Shire Council’s Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Graham Moore, has been working with the Local Aboriginal Lands Councils to ensure that the Aboriginal Totems and the rock monument are appropriately stored and returned following works.

The decision to place the totems and rock in storage was made to prevent the possibility of damage to the Aboriginal monuments while works are carried out.

The totems and rock were put in place as part of the first Memorandum of Understanding between the Aboriginal Community and Bega Valley Shire Council in 2001.

They remain an important recognition of the traditional owners and custodians of the Shire.
